From French film-maker Bertrand Tavernier's first feature Watchmaker of Saint-Paul to his acclaimed It All Starts Today (1999), his work, for all its unique variety, has maintained a consistent quality and political vision, and remained accessible to audiences inside and outside his native France. Offering an in-depth view of Tavernier's films, Hay examines the director-actor-camera relationships in them, as well as the influences of music, voice-overs and editing. Uniquely, as Tavernier notoriously avoids discussing his work with writers, the book is based on the film-maker's conversations with the author and on first-hand observations.AUTHORBIO: STEPHEN HAY is based at the Institute of Communication Studies, Leeds University.
